QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

WHAT IS THE NASOLABIAL FOLD?

The nasolabial fold or groove is a marking of the skin resulting from facial movement, thus a line or mark of expression. However, with aging these marks become evident via wrinkles that begin on the wings of the nose and go down to the commissure of the lips. They are one of the most common complaints in the office and can be corrected using hyaluronic acid gels for excellent results.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF NASOLABIAL FOLD?

It is caused by several factors, including:

  • Effects of gravity
  • sagging and ptosis (drooping) of subcutaneous tissues
  • reduction of collagen and hyaluronic acid
  • atrophy (decrease) and hypertrophy (increase) of adipose tissue
  • bone resorption (the process by which the bones are absorbed and broken down by the body)

The gradual loss of malar fat and the decrease in the amount ofelastin in the body, therefore, promote theappearance of thesewrinkles which becomes more evident by the increase in the skinsagging. Thus, the signsof advancing age, especially on the face, areobserved, and this is one of the reasons that lead individuals toseekresources that can reduce the effects of time.

Other causes responsible for its early appearance:

  • Excessive sun exposure (mainly without filter)
  • Genetics and hormonal modifications
  • Decreased muscle fibers (which make a support network for the skin)
  • Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption
  • Addicted position while sleeping
  • Exaggeration of mime when speaking
  • Severe weight loss
  • Bone atrophy
  • Action of gravity
  • Low skin hydration
